Brief History. In 1923. the UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the (British) South Africa Company. A constitution from 1961 favored whites in power. The UK did not recognize the act of independence in 1965 and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority. Finaly, in 1979 free elections were held which led to independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert Mugabe was the first prime minister and the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) dominating the political system since independence. In 2000 he caused an exodus of white farmers and soon afterwords, in 2002, he rigged presidential electons.
